Simplify for Happiness: Let Go of What Does Not Serve You

Updated: Apr 20, 2018

Today we are a third of the way through the 21 Day Happiness Challenge! This episode begins with a reminder about happiness as a process and a practice. Happiness is a process--something we need to do on a daily basis to build and maintain happiness. It is not something that simply happens to us, but something we actively do. It is also a practice-something we must keep trying, fail and fall, then get up and keep moving on! It is not about perfection, it is about small steps forward one choice at a time. Put simply, happiness is a series of decisions we make; this 21 Day Happiness challenge is all about doing a little bit more of what makes you happy...today and every day.

Simplify for Happiness: Let Go of What Does Not Serve You

In today’s challenge, we explore how simplifying or decluttering can lead to more joy, ease, freedom, and time. A simple edit in your life may lead to more happiness.

Key Takeaways

  • Recently American culture has become obsessed with cleaning up, clearing out, minimizing, and simplifying. Look at the wild success of the KonMari Method or of The Minimalists.

  • Cross cultural research reveals that many cultures tie simplicity to happiness. One interesting example is from Japan, where ma, or space/emptiness, is valued aesthetically and behaviorally. It is a powerful idea that says space provides ease, calm, and makes room for possibilities.

  • Simplicity can bring more joy, ease, freedom, time, and space to daily life, increasing an overall sense of well-being.

Today’s Challenge

Let it go! Let go of something taking up physical space in your life.

  1. What no longer serves you? What has been bothering you, is inconvient, or in your way? What can you remove to make space?

  2. Let it go! Give it away, recycle it, compost it, or throw it...depending on what's appropriate for your let go.

  3. Congratulations! This is your life, edited.
