Embrace Every Grain of Sand...or How to Turn Mindless Moments into Mindful Moments
Updated: Jan 11, 2018
Eckhart Tolle calls it “the power of now.” Research shows it can change your brain. It can make you happier. What is it? Mindfulness! Today’s assignment in the 21 Day Happiness Challenge helps you stay in the present moment.
Mindfulness is the practice of drawing your awareness to the present moment. The more we practice, the better we can fight the voice in our head that is constantly pulling us back into the past, or into the future.
Research using data from the Track Your Happiness app shows clearly that the more the mind wanders, the more happiness decreases. In contrast, the more present and focused a person is, the happier they are.
Do you want to spend half of your life distracted from living it? Research indicates about 50% of our time is spent inundated by thoughts that draw out of the present moment.
Put simply, mindfulness is a framework or set of tools to help pull you back to the power of now...back to the present moment.
Create an anchor to present moment by turning mindless moments into mindful moments.
Identify a mindless moment during the day...a time when you typically get lost in your head or just check out completely. This might be washing dishes, driving, etc. Use this mindless moment as an opportunity to practice mindfulness.
1. Narrate your experience. Create a running narration of what you do as you actually do it.
2. Focus on the breath. Focus on the inhale and exhale all the way through each cycle of breath.
